Reasons Divers Are Weird (and Proud of It)

A quick note: By the time you finish this, you'll be sharing it with your spouse, partner, or whoever needs to hear you say, "See. It's not just me!"

Let's get one thing out of the way:

Divers are weird.

Not "forget-your-keys-once-in-a-while" weird. Not "pineapple-on-pizza" weird.

We're talking about people who voluntarily strap a tank to their back, jump into the ocean, breathe underwater, and get excited about finding a sea slug the size of a raisin.

And honestly? We're proud of it. Aren't we?

Here are just a few reasons divers are delightfully, wonderfully weird.

We Pay Good Money to Get Wet

Most people spend their lives trying to avoid getting soaked...

But divers?

We literally plan entire vacations around it.

We book flights, reserve hotel rooms, rent boats, and wake up before sunrise just for the opportunity to spend an hour underwater.

Then we call it relaxing.

We Think Heavy Equipment = Fun

Imagine explaining scuba gear to someone who has never dived.

"First, you carry this heavy tank."

"Then you wear weights."

"Then you put on more equipment."

"And then you walk across a parking lot dressed like a confused astronaut."

For some reason, this sounds perfectly reasonable to divers.

Tiny Sea Creatures Make Us Lose Our Minds

A non-diver sees a dolphin.

"That's amazing!"

A diver sees a nudibranch the size of a jellybean.

"OH MY GOODNESS! GET THE CAMERA!"

The smaller the creature, the more excited divers seem to become.

Nobody really knows why.

We Speak an Entirely Different Language

Divers casually use phrases like:

  • Nitrox

  • Buoyancy

  • Safety stop

  • Surface interval

  • Macro photography

  • Back roll entry

To everyone else, it sounds like we're making things up.

We Judge Water by Visibility

Normal people: "The water looks beautiful."

Divers: "Looks like about 40 feet of visibility."

Normal people admire the scenery.

Divers are conducting underwater reconnaissance.

We Collect Gear Like Dragons Collect Treasure

Most hobbies require a few items.

Ask a diver if they need another piece of gear.

The answer is always yes.

We Get Excited About Things Most People Never Notice

Vacationers: "Look at the sunset!"

Divers: "Look at that juvenile trunkfish!"

One of these statements is much more likely to lead to a twenty-minute explanation.

We Voluntarily Wake Up at Unreasonable Hours

For reasons science still cannot explain, divers are willing to wake up at 5:00 a.m. while on vacation.

Not for work.

Not for an emergency.

For fun.

This behavior should probably be studied.

We Spend Hours Looking at Fish Photos

Couple reviews fish photos on a laptop at night; captions joke about blurry shots, with printed fish photos and camera gear nearby.

Most people take vacation photos of themselves.

Divers take 847 photos of fish.

Then spend the evening reviewing every single one.

"This one is a little blurry."

"This one is slightly less blurry."

"This one is my favorite."

Nobody else can tell the difference.

We Think Floating Underwater Is Normal

Imagine telling someone:

"I spent an hour breathing underwater while floating weightlessly among tropical fish."

That sounds like a dream.

To divers, that's just Saturday.

We Have Strange Priorities

Divers choose hotels based on questions like:

  • How close is the dive site?

  • Is there room for gear?

  • Where can I rinse my equipment?

  • How early can I get breakfast before the dive?

Everything else is secondary.

Ocean first.

Details later.

We Keep Going Back

Perhaps the weirdest thing about divers is that no matter how many dives they've done, they're always excited about the next one.

There might be a turtle.

There might be an octopus.

There might be a fish they've never seen before.

The ocean always has another surprise waiting.

And that's exactly why we love it.

The Final Verdict

Yes, divers are weird.

We get excited about tiny sea creatures.

We carry ridiculous amounts of equipment.

We wake up at strange hours.

We spend our vacations underwater.

But we've also discovered something pretty amazing:

The world beneath the surface is full of wonder.

So if being weird means exploring shipwrecks, swimming with sea turtles, and discovering hidden marine life, then we'll happily wear that badge of honor.

And proudly.

Very, very proudly.
